Chances

“Thank God.”, Ana whispered as she safely arrived at the bookstore. Luckily, she was already inside when the rain poured. She was at the bookstore to get some office supplies. Ana was browsing some stuff on Aisle 6 when she caught a glimpse of him. Jake was her first love and first heartbreak. She felt that familiar feeling she could clearly remember from years ago when they were still together, butterflies in her stomach and unsteady heart. There was no proper closure at all. Jake broke her heart but that didn’t make Ana’s love go away.

Ana walked towards Jake and pretended to bump his cart. Picking up the stuff that fell on the floor, Ana said, “I’m so sorry, I wasn’t looking.”. Ana looked up and stared at Jake because after so many years, he was here all over again and they were face to face just like they used to and she could not look away. But she noticed that Jake’s face was void of recognition. Ana expected some angry remarks from this guy but it didn’t come. Instead, a smiling Jake replied, “It’s okay.”. Thinking that this guy wasn’t Jake, Ana asked, “Jake? Is that you?”. “Yes. I’m Jake. I am so sorry. I was involved in a car accident last month and I lost some of my memories. Are we friends?”, Jake answered.

Ana’s mind was working double time as she processed this information. Jake probably has amnesia and doesn’t remember a thing about their past. Without hesitation, Ana replied, “Yes, we are. In fact, we are very close back then, Jake.”.

“Really? That’s great. Would you like some coffee after we are done? I would like to catch up.”, Jake said. Ana smiled, “Sure. I would love to.”.

This was Ana’s opportunity to make things right with the love of her life. This might be the biggest risk she ever made but she’s willing to gamble it all as long as she gets Jake back. It might be a deceitful act but Ana saw it as an opportunity to reunite with Jake. Besides, she believes that love is sweeter the second time around. But, is it?
